more than conquerors

The words on the merch are just these: more than conquerors. The small label under them is the Message Merch™ logo.

Those three words are from the Bible. They are not a slogan we made up.

Who wrote it

A man named Paul wrote them. He put them in a letter to people in Rome. You can find the line in Romans, chapter 8, verse 37.

He had just asked: who can pull us away from the love of Christ? Then he named the worst things he could. Trouble. Distress. Being hunted. Hunger. Having nothing to wear. Danger. The sword. He quoted an old psalm: “For thy sake we are killed all the day long.”

Then he said no. In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

The next lines go further. Death. Life. Angels. Powers. Things now. Things later. Nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What it means

A conqueror beats an enemy and the fight is over. “More than” means the fight may still be on. The hard things may still be happening. They still do not get the last word.

The victory is not that the trouble stops. The victory is that those things cannot pull us out of Christ’s love.

The ground of that is not how tough we are. It is “him that loved us.” That is Jesus. He died. He rose. He still stands for us. We share his win. Through him. Not through our grit.

Paul was writing to people who were actually suffering. He was not talking about a promotion or a good week. He was talking about suffering, want, danger, and death.

Start with Paul.

“It’s from the Bible. A man named Paul said that even in trouble, hunger, danger, death — those things don’t get the last word. Not because we’re tough. Because Jesus loved us, and nothing can pull us out of that.”

If they ask more:

“He wrote it to people who were actually suffering. He wasn’t selling a win. He was saying God’s love holds when the worst things show up.”
